Illuminating a National Icon

Mandylights was engaged to illuminate iconic landmarks within the Singapore Botanic Gardens as part of the venue’s EnlighTEN festival. Celebrating ten years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 166-year-old lush tropical gardens are a hugely popular site for both locals and tourists alike.

The EnglighTEN series of activations involved the careful illumination of four of the Gardens’ most loved sites; Tanglin Gate, Nassim Gate, Swan Lake and the Clocktower for a period of twenty days. Each site featured a different treatment, with detailed custom gobo projection on the Tanglin Gate, a stunning ten minute light show that played across Swan Lake, a time-shifting mix of neon and projection that encircled the Clock Tower and a ethereal gobo treatment along the Nassim Gate corridor.

The project spent nearly fourteen months in planning to ensure that lighting treatments were bespoke, respectful and discreet to create the perfect mix of magic, education and amplification of natural beauty. Mandylights was proud to work with our friends at Pico Singapore to deliver this spectacular project.

A Show With Meaning

The centrepiece of the event was a stunning visual show on the iconic Swan Lake – Singapore’s first man made lake and a perfect canvas for a large scale show. Using laser, audio, lighting and fog, the Mandylights team created a beautiful visual show that took viewers on a tour through the Gardens’ history and its contributions to Singapore and the world’s botanical advancements over the last 166 years. Visual creative was programmed by our team of designers both in Sydney and onsite in Singapore.

Full Production Delivery

Mandylights provided complete design and production services – utilising our highly reliable, bespoke outdoor lighting, power, laser, audio and control systems across the entire site. Equipment was freighted internationally and specially adapted to meet strict local regulations and standards. Our crew travelled from Australia to install hundreds of fixtures respectfully throughout the gardens, before our creative teams delivered on-site programming. By delivering all aspects of production entirely in house, Mandylights was able to guarantee professionalism and continuity from first idea through to final focus point – a process that took almost fourteen months.

Bespoke “hides” for laser and control elements were purpose-built for the show, designed to both hide technology from view and also to protect equipment from the constantly changing Singaporean weather which featured almost daily monsoon-like storms during the show run along with high humidity and baking hot temperatures.

Our technicians remained on site to run the show throughout the season, backed by our mNode 4G technology which allowed for remote monitoring from our global offices to identify any faults in advance each evening.

Creative Illumination

Across the rest of the site, lighting treatments enthralled visitors – with over fifty custom gobos used for Tanglin Gate, and dozens of other bespoke treatments around the four sites.

Each installation was programmed to progress automatically through dozens of curated visual states, encouraging visitors to dwell and experience the array of different effects that constantly evolved with colour and pattern effects.
